So…last night my computer decides it’s going to pitch a fit. Couldn’t even boot to setup, much less Windows Vista. No diagnostic beeps from the BIOS, HDD light on solid. I figured, “Great, the whole thing is hooped.” After a BIOS reset, i get the familiar power on self test screen. Big sigh of relief…UNTIL I realize Vista isn’t loading. Terrific.
After about an hour of trying to get Vista to boot I finally wave the white flag, grab my Vista disk and proceed with some much-needed R&R; Reformat & Reinstall. !@#$
I lost over a hundred photos, a couple of days’ progress on an application I’ve been working on in Access 2007, and well over 5 hours of time spent locating/reinstalling drivers and programs. Let’s not forget several weeks of progress on a game I’ve been playing. Yay. Finally, to add insult to injury, my TV is Windows Media Center so I can’t even watch the boob tube while I do all this.
I realized last night just how dependant we are, as a modern society, on technology. Sure, it makes our days easier with scheduling programs, contact lists, and project management applications. Sure, it provides us with a social outlet from the comfort of our living rooms with things like MSN Messenger, Facebook, Twitter, etc. The problem lies when the technology fails for whatever reason.
My day is lost without my cell phone and scheduler. Can I remember a number without my contact list? What day was that project due again? Where in the hell did my document go that I’ve been working on? My boss was expecting that today. Did I forget to save?
Is anyone else this dependent on PC’s and cell phones or am I just an anomaly?
